Name: Mei Liang
Country of Origin: Taiwan
Age: 22
Affiliation: (Citizen, Mafia((The particular Mafia alignment)), or Law Enforcement) Associated with the Asian mafia.
Expertise: (Job in life, place in the organization) Her true role within the mafia is unclear; it changes because of her on-and-off relationship with her adopted brother, Yao, who heads the Asian mafia. Currently, it seems to be going along quite well, though it may change in a matter of seconds.
She predominantly is a informer because she has excellent relations with some of the other families, such as the Italian mafia. Other times she acts as negotiator for familial disputes.
Personality: Optimistic and fashion loving, Mei is one who finds herself in the strangest of predicaments at all the wrong times. She is hard-working and strong-willed, two traits that have allowed her to survive for so long. When she is under pressure, however, she sometimes lets her nerves get the better of her, and her mind may accidentally slip.
She also has occasional mood swings, and when she is upset at you, she doesn't let you forget it. She can hold a grudge. A part of her secretly detests Yao, but she doesn't let him know that because of all the trouble it'd create and because she owes a lot to him. Another part of her wishes to go clean and forgo the mafia life, but it's harder than it looks, and she won't risk when she's come so far, even if it's something she's not necessarily proud of. She can be quite ambitious when she feels like it.
Mei is more emotional than the others Asians. She tries to rein her emotions in, but when she loses it, she really does lose it. She yells, she blushes, she makes a fool of herself, and she has tobeg ask for Yao's forgiveness. She can't help it; nor does she have any intention of changing that aspect of herself.
Appearance: Not quite five feet tall, Mei has long and dark brown hair, with a curly strand on the right side of her head. She wears pink flowers in her hair: they were a gift from a very long time ago, and she doesn't really remember anymore who gave it to her. Either that, or she just doesn't want to admit it.
Though a lot of times she is in need of money, she only buys expensive and high-quality clothes. Most times, she is wearing her favorite peach-colored qipao (of which she has several), but when the job calls for it, she will revert to a more discrete (and painfully plain) black. She is also trying out American fashion, and finds the flapper look very interesting.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Logical and level-headed, Mei knows the difference between right and wrong. Sometimes, she is almost a bit too idealistic, which puts her at odds with the other members. She is stubborn and argues for what she believes in, but her opinions a lot of times clash with those of others, in particular, Yao. However, the fact that she is willing to stand up for what she believes in causes the others to begrudgingly accept her as one of their own, especially since she's the only girl (so far) who ranks so high. Definitely on the brain end of the family and not so much on the muscle end.
Her gentle face belies her toughness, and she's an excellent negotiator.
She also makes her opinions known if she disagrees with the decisions or ideas she considers to be in poor taste or morals. The main problem with this is that she's in the Mafia (part of the reason why she wants to get out; but, ah, once you're in, you don't really get back out).
Weaknesses:
Because she is strong-willed and perhaps a bit on the brash side, she does risk her own life with her statements. Her arguments are more vocal than physical, however, because she is a girl, and she's still the adopted sister of Wang Yao (despite the on-and-off-ness of their relationship).
Also, sometimes, she overthinks, leading to over-speculation and endless worrying. A bit paranoid, especially when she is under the weather, she lets her emotions get the better of her. There are times when she refuses to listen what others say because she is so embroiled in her own belief, leading to some narrow-minded-ness. This, of course, applies only for work. When it comes to culture or food, she's always more than willing to try out new things.
And she's not a fighter. Maybe she'll try and learn something from Yao, but, really, she's not interested in fighting when there are tons of other people who can protect her. Also, who'd attack a girl?

History:
Mei was born in Taipei, Taiwan during a time of political and social insecurity. She grew up hearing of the emperor in mainland China who'd been overthrown, and the Nationalist party who took its place. Later on, she heard of the internal civil war going on and the thousands of people who were fleeing for their lives. Quite frankly, she didn't care much for that.
She lived with her mother and father. She was an only child and never knew much parental love. Her father was distant, always away on oversea business trips, and her mother was frail and listless, constantly worried about her husband who might fall prey to some foreign girl. As a result, Mei's existence was mostly ignored.
Through this, she learned to rely only on herself. She couldn't depend on others, and she certainly wasn't ever going to ask anyone for help. If she had to struggle by herself, so be it. In school, academically, she performed well without trying, but as she got older, she also became more lazy, and her grades slipped. No one really cared.
She failed her high school entrance examinations, and never went to a university; she worked at odd jobs and tried to stay away from home as much as possible. When she was eighteen, she learned of America. The next day, she cut ties with her family, changed her name, and left on a ship to sail across the Pacific. Today, she goes by Mei Liang, but no one knows her birth name. She'd rather die than tell, to tell the truth. Because recently she has become more enamored of American culture, she has also taken an English name: Vivian. But no one calls her that.
Upon arriving in America, she was taken in by the political boss that controlled the docks in San Francisco, but insubordination led her to being thrown back out. She maintains that her meeting with Yao was purely accidental - it's still undetermined exactly where and how they met, but the fact remains: she became his "sister" and hence, affiliated member of the Asian mafia. They don't talk about it too much. It's also unsure whether she really wanted to join the Mafia or not in the first place, but Yao is insistent and she has no where else to go anyway.
One day, she dreams of living independently without the inevitable complications of Mafia life. She might have to admit that she's getting used to it. Sort of.
Sample/Character Introduction:
If there was one thing Mei Liang knew, it was this: it was dark. Everything else, everything she had ever taken for granted: that all had been tossed out the moment she stepped on Angel Island and introduced herself to America. It was a strange feeling, one that she couldn't quite place, and the uncertainty was nerve-wracking. She told herself: think. She felt only slightly better.
The alleyways were dangerous, as they always were, always had been, but it was comforting when you were with someone, even if that someone was a person you cared naught for and cursed every night. A person was a person was a person. She looked behind her shoulder and could have sworn that she heard the sound of footsteps. No one could be following her. For one thing, she wasn't important enough, and she knew this very well. She always had been extremely astute about her self-worth, and as of this moment, her life was not one worth killing.
But it was cold, as the nights were bound to be, and the she had only the stars above for company. The cold she didn't mind. Her clothes, the same clothes she'd worn when she'd arrived, were slightly torn and there was a smell about them that no amount of washing could get rid of. That was the only time she ever thought of home.
"I could go and find another boss to join," she thought, but the memory of her previous experience had not been the most pleasant one. But what else was there? The bosses weren't going to discriminate her for her sex or her race: she was a human being, and as long as she could vote, she'd have a place to stay, a portion of food to call her own. Boss So-and-so, she thought (for she couldn't bother to remember his name), had been eager for her vote, if not more. It was a good thing she'd left as quickly as she did.
The question remained: now what? she asked the stars. Up ahead, a light seemed to protrude out of the ground. Closer inspection led to the discovery that was an underground bar. She entered, and was shocked to hear her native tongue splashed between the sound of beer and gambling. She thought she smelled smoke.
"Ah, are you new?" came a voice, a voice so gentle and feminine that it surprised her to see that it belonged to a boy not too much older than her.
"Yes," she said; and thus, they met.
