History:
Lilli was born in the Principality of Liechtenstein, a tiny nation bordered by Austria and Switzerland. The first years of her life were pleasant, living on the small farm with both of her parents. She never had any brothers or sisters, but she had always wanted to have some. But despite that, she was happy with her little family.
When World War I broke out, Liechtenstein began to suffer from economic hardships. Lilli’s parents took her and a few possessions and fled the country, making it all the way to France before the war got too bad. The little family escaped to New York City and Lilli’s parents found a small school run by a German, who was helping Germanic immigrant children learn English. Lilli adored her teacher and learned English quickly at that school. But the war was still raging in Europe and an angry man burned down the little school, claiming that he was doing good by ridding the world of the German people.
Managing to escape, Lilli ran all the way home, the smell of burnt flesh and the cries of her friends still fresh in her mind. After that, Lilli never returned to school, instead choosing to stay home and help her parents run a tailor shop. Finding that she enjoyed making clothes, Lilli helped out often, teaching her parents English as they worked. Her parents would always ask her if she wanted to talk about what had happened but every time, Lilli told them that everything was alright.
So for the past couple years, Lilli has worked diligently at making clothing for all sorts of people. She also runs errands for her parents, such as getting food, buying more fabric or getting more thread and needles. Having gotten to know the neighborhood she lives in, Lilli likes to take walks, trying to find the hidden beauty in this concrete jungle filled with a mix of people and crime.
Sample/Character Introduction:
Lilli was out for a walk like usual, enjoying the cool air, even though Mutti had made her bundle up in warm clothing. The wind rushed through the alleys and streets between the buildings that only seemed to get taller and taller the further downtown she went. Seeing these buildings made her long for home, where she remembered there little farm and wide open spaces and beautiful mountains. Oh, how she loved seeing the pretty mountains covered in snow during the winter.
But Mutti und Vati said that America was their home now and that they would have to be happy here. Once they had enough money, they could move out west and get a farm, just like back home. But Lilli knew that the farm would be nothing like home, because this was a different country. There wouldn’t be the beautiful Alps surrounding the new farm and besides, by the time her parents had earned enough money, she would be old enough to marry. She just hoped that she would meet a nice boy here in America.
Pausing from her walk, Lilli noticed a small flower growing through the cracks in the sidewalk. She hurried over to it and knelt down, smiling at the little flower. “Sehr hübsch, meine Kleine!” At her excitement, the girl slipped back into German, her small hand reaching out the flower petals gently. Lilli wanted to take the flower home and plant it in tiny garden behind her house and shop but she new that if she tried to pull it out from between the sidewalk cracks, it would die. There was no way for her to get to the roots and this saddened her but all she could do is pray that the little flower managed to live.
